Dear Colleagues, Students, Alumni and Friends,
The University held the Centenary Ceremony yesterday (August 18). More details can be found at http://www.hku.hk/press/news_detail_6552.html
In response to an unpleasant incident involving our students in demonstrations and the police on the University's campus yesterday, Vice-Chancellor Professor Lap-Chee Tsui said that he found the incident regrettable and believed that the police would also review its deployment operations.
Professor Tsui said: "HKU has always been a place of knowledge and diverse views. The University has always been firm on our traditions of freedom, openness and diversity, and will continue to encourage and protect the freedom of independent thought and speech. The University is a place of higher learning. We embrace different opinions and have always insisted on being open. The peaceful and rational manner of expression by HKU students and alumni yesterday was an excellent example of peaceful demonstration."
The University should always ensure the safety of its students and members at all times. The incident was regrettable and hence we will review the matter.
The Campus is a peaceful and rational place, where absolute respect is given to the expression of views, and a conducive space for and an open attitude to these views can be found.
With regard to students' question concerning the invitation of Vice Premier Li Keqiang, Professor Tsui clarified that Vice Premier Li was invited by the University to attend the HKU Centenary Ceremony. HKU has close links with the Mainland. The visit by Vice-Premier Li will further enhance mutual understanding and exchange.
We are grateful for all your support and advice. The Centenary presents an opportunity for reflecting on our missions, and it is always HKU's goal to serve the community.
